So I started hunting around for any kit I still had in the cupboards, and other than a load of Audison Connections cable, the only thing I dug out was a set of Focal Utopia 3.5WM’s that I bought a long long time ago and never actually used.
I’ve also found a good deal through a contact on a Helix V Twelve DSP, M One X, and a Focal 10WM sub.
The V Twelve seems to fit the bill as the HK system in the car has 11 outputs and the amp has 12 speaker level inputs.
So things have been moving, and then it dawns on me. The Polestar 2 has no front midbass drivers in the doors or under the seats etc. Instead it runs active tweeters in the pillars, 4″ Mids in the doors, and then an ‘air woofer’. This is a dual voice could driver on the outside of the firewall that fires into the cabin somewhere under the dash through a port.
Having connected the DSP up temporarily I’ve worked out the mid output on the HK amp runs down to 160Hz, then the ‘air woofer’ runs from 160 down to 50hz, and then the sub in the boot runs 50 down.
So knowing all this, I have a stereo image I can get out of the front outputs from 160hz to 20k+ and then 160hz down is all mono. Not ideal and those nice Focal 3.5WM don’t seem to be such a useful thing at all, given they probably won’t go lower than 250hz from what I can make out.
Maybe time for a rethink…
